Trigger Point injections Q & A

What are trigger point injections?

Trigger point injections are a type of therapy that helps relieve muscle pain. Trigger points themselves are painful knots in your muscles that feel tight and tender, often forming around tears in your muscles and other small injuries. Sometimes, you can feel a trigger point when you rub around the painful area.

When injected, steroids can loosen a trigger point and relieve the resulting pain. Dr. Kushnerik injects a small-dose mixture of a numbing anesthetic and a steroid into your trigger point after pressing on your muscle to find its location. You can get several trigger point injections during one appointment if you have more than one trigger point.

What types of pain can trigger point injections treat?

If you have an area of muscle tightness that isn’t associated with a long-term condition, it may go away permanently after a single injection. Tension headaches, shoulder tension, and old injuries respond well to trigger point injections.

Dr. Kushnerik often uses trigger point injections to treat pain associated with myofascial pain syndrome, a chronic (long-term) disorder that causes pain and tension in your muscles and often results in numerous trigger points throughout your body.

Dr. Kushnerik might also recommend trigger point injections as part of your treatment for fibromyalgia, another chronic pain condition that also results in localized tenderness in your muscles.

It’s important to keep in mind that these conditions result in recurring trigger points. For this reason, you may need to return to Dr. Kushnerik’s office for regular trigger point injection appointments.

What should I expect following a trigger point injection?

Trigger point injections provide immediate pain relief and an improvement in your mobility. After your injections, Dr. Kushnerik instructs you to:

  • Avoid vigorous muscle activity for several days
  • Use ice or heat for any post-injection soreness
  • Wear a bandage over the injection point
  • Book additional injections if you have a chronic condition

Most people recover quickly from trigger point injections without complications. In rare cases, you might have post-injection pain. However, this usually goes away by itself after a couple of days.
